Overview Biography

• Academic Administration & Curriculum Development and Assessment:

  Dr. Riad has extensive academic and administrative experience through his many years of teaching, research, and project management.

  Dr. Riad has led several specialized committees that were focused on curriculum development and assessment .

  Dr. Riad was the founder and director of the VT-MENA collaborative graduate program for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research between Virginia Tech and Egypt.  Through this program, over 70 Egyptian PhD students were able to pursue their graduate studies and research with the participation of more than 50 faculty members from both sides .

  Dr. Riad held several lead positions at Virginia tech related to international collaboration and globalization.

  Honors

  Dr. Riad is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, IEEE, since 1992, cited for "contributions to time-domain measurements through physical modeling of sampling devices, simulation, and deconvolution ."

  He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Florida.

  Dr. Riad was honored by a Professor Emeritus status as well as received several awards and noted honors related to his research, education, years of academic service, and international program activities.

  Scholarship

  Dr. Riad received his B.Sc. and M. Sc. degrees, both in Electrical Engineering, from Cairo University, in 1966 and 1972, respectively, and completed his Ph.D. studies at the University of Toledo, Ohio with all his dissertation research completed at the National Institute for Standards and Technology, NBS at the time, and the University of Colorado in Bouder, Colorado, in 1976 .

  Dr. Riad’s engineering academic experience is in research and development work in the areas of communication and electronic engineering, with particular emphasis in the areas of RF and Microwave measurements, instrumentation, signal processing, and physical modeling .

  Dr. Riad has co-authered the undergraduate textbook on electromagnetic fields: Electromagnetic Fields and Waves: Fundamentals of Engineering, Sedki M. Riad and Iman M. Salama, Mc-Graw Hill, ISBN10: 1260457141 | ISBN13: 9781260457148, 688 pages, 2020.

  Dr. Riad has published extensively including more than 85 refereed journal articles, 15 invited presentations, more than 50 scientific reports, and about 200 conference papers and presentations.  He has contributed to three scientific books. Dr. Riad is an active reviewer for several IEEE transaction societies and IEEE conferences.

  Dr. Riad has supervised 18 Ph.D. and 25 Master students.  In addition, he has co-supervised many other Master’s and Doctoral students .

  Dr. Riad has been a director/principal investigator of more than 100 research projects. He holds two patents with practical industrial implementation.

  Dr. Riad received his B.Sc. and M. Sc. degrees, both in Electrical Engineering, from Cairo University, in 1966 and 1972, respectively, and completed his Ph.D. studies at the University of Toledo, Ohio with all his dissertation research completed at the National Institute for Standards and Technology, NBS at the time, and the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, in 1976 .

  Dr. Riad has worked at NIST, the National Institute for Standards and Technology, and at the University of Colorado, both in Boulder, Colorado; the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida; at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; and for over 35 years at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia (since 1979). He is a past Chairman of the U.S. national Commission A of URSI, the International Union of Radio Science .

  Dr. Riad represented Virginia Tech in Egypt as the lead technical and academic expert in several projects and initiatives .

  Consultation & International Experience

  Through his involvement in Egypt, Dr. Riad participated in strategic dialogues, workshops, and committees that were focused on modernization and development of education, scientific research, and information technology .

  Dr. Riad served as a “volunteer” advisor to both the minister of Higher Education and the President of Alexandria University .

  Dr. Riad is a founding member of both the Alexandria University Foundation for Scientific and Societal Innovation as well as the Egyptian Foundation for Technical Education Development that was responsible for establishing the Nile University .

  Dr. Riad has also served on the committee for modernization of Egyptian secondary education.  This committee was a joint committee between the ministries of Education and Higher education and was co-chaired by both ministers .

  Dr. Riad served as the Senior Technical Advisor, Partners for a Competitive Egypt, US-AID sponsored Project, Consortium of PaL-Tech, IBM, and Virginia Tech, 2002-2003. Through this project, he worked in the areas of the development of the Egyptian Nile University, the IT-in-Schools, and the ICT cluster where the development of internationally competitive IT clusters in the Egyptian ICT private sector was the main objective.  Duties involved performing technical studies and providing needed consultation as well as serving as liaison with the Egyptian counterparts of the project . 

  Dr. Riad initiated the VT-MENA collaborative graduate program for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research between Virginia Tech and Egypt.  Through this program, over 70 Egyptian PhD students were able to pursue their graduate studies and research partially in Egypt and at VT towards their VT graduate degree. Over 50 faculty members from both sides participated in both the research and student supervision in this program .

  Dr. Riad participated in the foundation of the Smart Critical Infrastructure Center of Excellence at Alexandria University.  The center serves the integration of computing, communications, and informatics technologies into critical infrastructure systems for both local and worldwide implementation.  The center provides opportunities to the VT-MENA graduates to pursue relevant research in Egypt .
